You don't need technical climbing skills, but good preparation makes the trek safer and far more enjoyable.
Start training 8 to 12 weeks ahead: regular hikes with a loaded daypack, stair climbing and cardio. Break in your boots well before you arrive.
Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm hat and gloves, sun protection, a headlamp and a reusable water bottle.
Walk slowly ("pole pole"), drink plenty of water and tell your guide about any symptoms. Longer routes allow better acclimatisation.
See your doctor before you travel, arrange insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and check your visa requirements.

The two main dry seasons are January to mid-March and June to October. These periods usually offer the clearest skies and most stable trail conditions.
Uhuru Peak is 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level, the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa.
Longer routes such as Lemosho (8 days) and the Northern Circuit (9 days) give more time to acclimatise, which improves summit chances. Machame and Rongai (7 days) are balanced choices, Marangu (6 days) uses huts, and Umbwe (6 days) is steep and best for experienced trekkers.
Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, so no climbing experience is required, but good general fitness helps. Regular walking or hiking for several weeks beforehand is recommended.
Most visitors need a visa. Requirements depend on nationality, so see our traveller visa page and confirm with official Tanzanian immigration sources before you travel.
