About Mount Meru

Mount Meru rises inside Arusha National Park, overlooking Arusha town in northern Tanzania. At 4,566 metres (14,980 feet), it is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro — and one of Africa’s most rewarding non-technical treks.

The lower slopes often reveal wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, monkeys and a rich birdlife (an armed park ranger accompanies groups in the forest zone). Vegetation changes clearly as you climb. Higher up, sections along the saddle and summit ridge are steep, but no technical climbing equipment is required.

Mount Meru crater and ridge landscape
Views from the summit ridge include Meru Crater below and Kilimanjaro about 80 km to the northeast on clear days.

Overnight accommodation is in alpine huts (Miriakamba and Saddle Hut). Most people complete the climb in 3 days / 2 nights. Because the descent from the summit takes roughly seven hours, many climbers prefer an extra night at Miriakamba — making a 4-day / 3-night itinerary more comfortable.

Why Climb Mount Meru?

Outstanding scenery Steep crater walls, ash cone views and — on clear days — Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon make Meru one of East Africa’s most photogenic treks.
Wildlife on the approach Unlike most Kilimanjaro routes, the lower Meru trail often includes game viewing with a park ranger in the forest and savannah zones.
Ideal before Kilimanjaro Many climbers use Meru as a 3–4 day acclimatisation and fitness step before a longer Kilimanjaro itinerary.
Shorter than Kili, still high You reach over 4,500 m without a week-long commitment — ideal if time is limited but you still want a serious summit.

Practical Tips for Climbing Meru

Expect a long summit day Start early. The ridge is exposed and the descent is lengthy — good boots, poles and layers matter.
Prefer 4 days if unsure The extra night at Miriakamba reduces fatigue and makes the trip more enjoyable for many first-time high-altitude hikers.
Pack similarly to Kilimanjaro Layers, waterproof shell, warm hat and gloves, headlamp and a solid daypack. See our Kilimanjaro gear list for a close match.
Combine with Arusha or safari Meru sits next to Arusha — easy to pair with a short safari, cultural visits or a transfer toward Kilimanjaro or the northern parks.
